The craftsman behind Luminaire Boréal is Jocelyn Bélair. Musician, cabinetmaker and wood turner. Everything is designed, manufactured and assembled in my workshop. When cutting the blind, the log can weigh a few tens of pounds. Once the piece is finished, it weighs only a few hundred grams.

The outside is first turned to the desired size and lines, then the log is hollowed out until the walls become thin enough to be translucent. The rest of the work is done with a bulb placed outside the turned part. The light serves as a guide in order to obtain a constant thickness and translucency throughout the height of the lampshade.

The lampshade will then be dried, finely sanded and oiled. Thin walls give it strength because it can expand or contract with changes in humidity.
